De son vivant, Sylvia Plath a publié de nomnbreux poèmes dans des revues américaines ou anglaises, mais un seul recueil : Le Colosse. Plusieurs centaines de poèmes restaient inédits.Son mari et la s'ur de ce dernier établiront trois recueils : Ariel, en 1965, qui aussitôt la place par les grands poètes anglo-saxons contemporains, puis La Traversée et Arbres d'hiver en 1971.En 1981 paraît Collected Poems - 224 poèmes présentés chronologiquement et couvrant les six dernières années de sa vie (de 1956 à 1963).
