When karen's investigation takes us back to anka's life in Nazi Germany, the reader discovers how the personal and the political and the past and the present converge, and how even the good can harbor a touch of the monstrous. Rendered in a kaleidoscopically and breath takingly virtuosic visual style that combines panel sequences and montage, my favorite thing is monsters is a revelatory work of striking originality and unnerving power.

Ce roman graphique de 800 pages qu’Emil Ferris aura mis 6 ans à créer est une claque monstrueuse à tous les niveaux. Graphiquement, d’abord, c’est une œuvre complètement époustouflante. Ses dessins au stylo sont d’une richesse incroyable, foisonnants de détails et de subtilités riches de sens. Mais la claque est aussi à trouver du côté narratif. Les monstres d’Emil Ferris sont autant un hommage à la pop culture qu’un cri d’amour pour la différence. C’est un récit qui parle de minorité et qui le fait avec beaucoup de justesse. C’est aussi un récit aux sujets forts, tant historiques qu’intimes, parlant autant d’enfance que de liberté d’être qui l’on souhaite. Retour au Chicago des années 60 aux côtés de Karen pour cette intrigue entre récit personnel, secrets à élucider, ode à la différence, drames familiaux et fresque sociale.
