Résumé : A la fin du XIXe siècle, dans la petite ville de Hanover, sur un plateau du Nebraska balayé par le vent, le pionnier Bergson meurt. Encore adolescente, sa fille aînée Alexandra se retrouve chef de famille, face à ses trois frères Oscar, Lou et le tout jeune Emil, face à la terre sauvage de l'Ouest et aux passions qui agitent les communautés d'immigrants norvégiens, français, russes et bohémiens de Tchécoslovaquie qui peuplent la région. Autour d'Alexandra, évoluent Ivar le Fou, ami des oiseaux et des chevaux, le couple d'amants Emil et Marie, promis à la mort, tout un monde, confronté à la misère, à la nature violente et belle, aux tempêtes intérieures. Quant à Alexandra, véritable héroïne du Far West, elle bâtira en moins de vingt ans l'exploitation la plus prospère de la Ligne du Partage des Eaux, amoureuse des grands espaces à ciel ouvert et de la terre, mais surtout de Carl Linstrum, qu'elle attendra durant des années.
