De big-bang en trou noir, de principe d'incertitude en flèche du temps, Hawking fait le point sur ce que nous savons aujourd'hui de l'évolution de l'univers, sans jamais avoir recours à la moindre équation mathématique. Comme il le raconte dans la préface, son éditeur lui avait dit que chaque équation diminuerait les ventes de moitié. Commencement du temps et fin de la physique ?
Sous le titre Commencement du Temps et Fin de la Physique?, on trouvera rassemblés deux textes de Stephen Hawking d'époques différentes. Le premier, La Fin de la physique théorique est-elle en vue? est le texte de la Leçon inaugurale que Stephen Hawking prononça, en avril 1980, à Cambridge, lorsqu'il prit possession de la chaire de Mathématiques, succédant à... Newton et à Dirac. Le second, Le Bord de l'espace-temps, a été publié en 1989, et est donc quasiment contemporain de Une brève Histoire du Temps. Mais tous deux participent de la même fascination de la question des origines et du caractère inévitable des lois qui décrivent l'univers. Peut-on -et comment- parvenir à une théorie du monde au niveau le plus fondamental, la microphysique, et peut-on appliquer cette théorie à l'univers entier, au macrocosme?
